For many years the games industry has faced a gap between education and what is required in the professional industry. In the current economic climate it has become harder to bridge this gap.
It takes game schools in average up to two years to develop and implemented a new curriculum. Game schools and universities offering game related programs face the challenges of a fast paced games industry that rapidly changes every six months, and an ever increasing amount of knowledge with a faster decreasing shelf life in a technologically advanced world.

The paradigm of life-long learning is common sense to survive in the games industry: Game developers build upon their base of knowledge and continue investing in their future by training their already experienced employees during their careers. On the flip side development studios spend up to six months training new hires comprised of graduates and self-taught artists who are just starting their careers in order to get them to the level required to work on games. Thus game developers are becoming increasingly adverse and selective when hiring new talent.
Self-taught artists and game art graduates all face the same challenges when trying to cross the gap to start their career in the games industry. In order to get a job in games they need experience but in order to get the required experience they need to get a job first. The situation doesn’t improve due to the fact that competition on the games job market is becoming harsher every day.
